The two retaining straps in each pannier have a bad habit of getting squeezed in between the pannier case and the lid when you close the pannier.
Using a short adjustable rubber band between the straps ensures that they are pulled towards the center of the pannier when it is closed.
And you can still easily get your gear in and out of the pannier.
